3% of Organizations Say Their Leaders Are Ready for AI. What Does That Mean for You?

Last Updated August 18, 2026

Only 3% of organizations say their leaders are highly prepared to manage AI-enabled ways of working, according to July 2026 research from ManpowerGroup Talent Solutions and Everest Group. At the same time, 78% report employee concern about how AI could affect their jobs. For managers navigating these changes, Michigan State University’s online Professional Certificate in Implementing AI Management and Leadership and Master Certificate in AI-Enabled Leadership and Business Transformation offer opportunities to build skills in AI adoption, change management and organizational strategy.

A separate 2026 Acorn survey found a similar gap: 77% of executives said managers were prepared to guide AI skills development, while 91% of employees said their managers were not. For managers, AI leadership involves more than understanding new tools. It also requires the ability to guide teams through change, evaluate opportunities, communicate expectations and connect AI initiatives to business goals.

What Does AI Leadership Readiness Look Like?

AI adoption can change how teams work, what skills employees need and how managers make decisions. As organizations expand their use of AI, leaders may need to determine where the technology adds value, how employees should be supported, how to address uncertainty or resistance, and how to move from experimentation to responsible implementation.

Recent research highlights the importance of leadership readiness alongside AI adoption. For managers, that means developing skills beyond the technology itself, including evaluating AI opportunities, guiding teams through change, building support for new processes and connecting technology decisions to organizational objectives.

Why Consider a Formal Certificate?

Learning through experience can be valuable, but a structured, flexible online program can provide a focused way to build and apply leadership skills.

Michigan State University’s Professional Certificate in Implementing AI Management and Leadership is designed for managers and team leads navigating AI-driven change. The program focuses on practical leadership skills and strategic frameworks rather than technical training. No technical background, coding experience or prior AI knowledge is required.

The two-course, 8-week program covers topics including leading teams through AI-related change, evaluating AI opportunities, managing resistance, building trust, developing business cases and aligning stakeholders.

Is There a More Advanced Option for Senior Leaders?

For professionals looking beyond team-level implementation, MSU also offers a Master Certificate in AI-Enabled Leadership and Business Transformation.

The five-course, 20-week program builds on AI management and leadership with additional work in strategic business models, transformational and visionary leadership, and creative problem-solving. MSU describes the program as designed for senior managers, directors and aspiring executives who view AI transformation as a leadership and strategy challenge.

Which Program Fits Your Goals?

The two programs address different levels of responsibility.

The Professional Certificate can be a fit for managers focused on helping their teams navigate AI adoption. The Master Certificate expands that foundation for professionals interested in organizational transformation and broader strategic leadership.

Build the Skills to Lead Through AI Change

The research does not suggest that every manager needs to become an AI engineer. It does suggest that leadership readiness is an important consideration as organizations adopt AI and change how work gets done.

For professionals responsible for teams, projects or organizational strategy, developing the ability to evaluate AI opportunities, communicate change and guide people through new ways of working can be one way to prepare for that environment.

Michigan State University’s online AI leadership certificates provide two pathways based on professional goals: the Professional Certificate in Implementing AI Management and Leadership for managers and team leads, and the Master Certificate in AI-Enabled Leadership and Business Transformation for senior leaders focused on broader organizational change.
