From Supervisor to Strategic Leader: One Graduate’s Path Through MSU’s Online Master’s in Healthcare Management

A few years into her career as a Population Health Supervisor, Kelsey Hoffman reached a familiar crossroads: enjoying the work, but recognizing that reaching the next level of leadership would take more than experience alone.
“I realized that if I wanted to continue growing professionally and pursue future leadership opportunities, I needed to further my education,” she recalls. But the biggest shift didn’t come from a textbook. It came from the cohort itself. “Students came from across the healthcare industry — including physicians, nurses, operations leaders, and professionals from inpatient, outpatient, and behavioral health settings,” she said. “That exposure broadened my understanding of healthcare and strengthened my ability to collaborate across disciplines.”

The results followed quickly. “Earning my degree accelerated my professional growth and opened doors to opportunities I may not have otherwise considered. I entered the program as a Supervisor and have since experienced significant career advancement, taking on increasingly strategic leadership roles across multiple sectors of healthcare.”
The shift wasn’t just in title. It was in how she saw the industry itself. “Since graduating, I’ve worked in payer, payvider, and healthcare technology and services organizations. The program provided a strong foundation that prepared me to navigate healthcare from multiple perspectives and understand the interconnected roles of people, process, and technology.”
